謹以此詩懷念「胡耀恆教授」

Sonnet 98

本詩大意：「春天時我離開了你，也斷絕了所有春天的喜悅，鳥語花香都不能帶來慰藉；眼見都是你的倒影，處處複製你的美好。雖然春色蕩漾，於我如寒冬，我勉強對著你投射的影子戲春。」詩中的四月天，化身為一位活潑的青年，穿著像小丑般鮮豔多色的服裝，萬物都感染他的朝氣，唯獨不能博詩人一笑。和S27、S29、S44、S45這幾首熾烈的感情相比，本詩的筆觸恬淡，沒有強烈的情緒字眼，把思念表現的婉約綿長。詩人雖說無心賞春，但春色已在字裡行間，點點離愁，清媚動人。這首詩的文字似乎亟欲與內容脫勾，自成一種疏離之美。

From you have I been absent in the spring,     

When proud-pied April, dressed in all its trim,     

Hath put a spirit of youth in everything,

That heavy Saturn laughed and leaped with him.

Yet nor the lays of birds, nor the sweet smell             

Of different flowers in odor and in hue,                

Could make me any summer’s story tell,              

Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew.

Nor did I wonder at the lily’s white,

Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose,

They were but sweet, but figures of delight,

Drawn after you, you pattern of all those.

Yet seem’d it winter still, and, you away,

As with your shadow I with these did play.

 

1–4行

2.  proud-pied: brilliantly multi-colored. 鮮豔繽紛的。

trim: finery; additional decoration, typically along the edges of something and in contrasting color or material. 炫目的裝飾；花俏的裝飾，特指在衣服的邊緣以強烈對比色或不同材質做成裝飾。

3.  heavy: melancholy, morose. 憂鬱的、慍怒的；heavy with years. 年邁的。Saturn: 土星；（羅馬神話）農業之神。星象學裡土星主憂鬱；農神在西方文化的想像裡是一個年紀老邁，行動遲緩的神祇。這兩個意象結合起來，恰巧和春天的活力形成對比。這行的意思是，春天歡樂的氣氛連土星（或農神）都感染了，與春起舞。 laught: laughed.

 

5–8行    

5.  Yet nor: yet neither. 

the lays of birds: （詩歌用語）bird song. 

a lay: a short lyric or narrative poem intended to be sung. 一首抒情短詩或敘事詩，用以吟唱。

6.  這行使用倒序 (reverse order)，還原為：of flowers different in odour and in hue.  different: varied. 不同的、各樣的。

odor: (UK) odour. 香氣。

hue: color, tone, shade. 色澤。

7.  summer’s story: pleasant narrative. 愉快的故事。 夏季在十六世紀的英國是一年中美好的時光（參見S18註釋），夏季介於春天的萌芽、生長，秋季的成熟、收穫，用以比喻人生的青年期。

8.  lap: (1) 坐時大腿與膝蓋之間的部位，即是膝上型電腦 (laptop) 可放置的地方。(2)（中古英文）衣裳或女性裙子的前片，古早用來兜東西，功用如口袋。此處指山谷中的一片低窪地；山窪。

 

9–12行  

10. vermilion: fiery red. 火紅、鮮紅。

11. 11. figures: symbols, representations. 象徵、呈現。

drawn after you: modeled on you. 模擬你的、以你為範本的。

 

13–14行  

13. shadow: portrait. 影像、影子。

these: i.e. flowers.

在春天的時候我離開了你；

多彩的四月，披著一身華服，

為世間萬物注入青春活力，

連憂鬱的土星也隨之起舞，

但無論是鳥的歌聲，抑或

種種花卉不同的芳香與色彩，

都不能使我歡訴夏日的傳說，

或從燦爛的山坳將它們採摘。

百合花的潔白我不覺稀奇，

也不讚美玫瑰的朱紅深深；

它們不過是悅目標誌、香氣，

來自於你──你是這一切的本尊。

  但似乎仍是冬日，且因你遠離，
