謹以此詩紀念「胡耀恆教授」

Sonnet 17  Who will believe my verse in time to come

S17是「繁衍」系列的最後一首。大意是：我的詩僅能訴說你一部分的美好，如果容許我盡情發揮，書寫你萬般的美好，後世必會質疑「詩人撒謊」。若你留下後代，你不僅活在子孫之中，也活在我的詩中；兩者共同見證你曾經的容顏美儀。詩人總結勸婚的主題，宣告子嗣和詩歌都能令歌頌的對象不朽 (immortal)。

Sonnet 17

 

Who will believe my verse in time to come,

If it were filled with your most high deserts?

Though yet heaven knows it is but as a tomb

Which hides your life, and shows not half your parts.        4

 

If I could write the beauty of your eyes

And in fresh numbers number all your graces,

The age to come would say, “This poet lies;

Such heavenly touches ne’er touched earthly faces.”         8

 

So should my papers, yellowed with their age,

Be scorned, like old men of less truth than tongue,

And your true rights be termed a poet’s rage,

And stretched metre of an antique song.                  12

 

   But were some child of yours alive that time,

   You should live twice, in it, and in my rhyme.

 

 

1–4行   

10. verse: poetry. 

11. deserts: what you deserve. 你應得的美譽。發音和甜點 “dessert” 相同；十六世紀用法，今已作廢。

12. heaven knows: 「天知道」本是口語裡的陳腔濫調，此處卻賦予新意；少男的美好絕對是「天」字級的，但如果埋葬在黃土墳塚，連上天都要惋惜，對世人而言不過留下一座墳塚而已。

but: only, merely. 

13. parts: admirable qualities. 令人欣羨的品質。

 

5–8行    

4.  write: outline, draw. 描繪。

5.  numbers: (n.)(1) verses 詩。(2) poetic measures. 詩的韻律。

number: (v.) count. 數算、計算。

相同的字以不同詞類或字尾變化在同一句重複，修辭學稱為「字根重複」。

8.  touches...touched:  touches; vivid details. 精緻素描。

「字根重複」技巧的另一例。 heavenly...earthly: 以天地的差別比喻少男的天仙氣質，世人少見。唐詩描寫人間的仙樂飄飄，也有類似修辭：「此曲只應天上有，人間能得幾回聞」（杜甫《贈花卿》）。

 

9–12行

9.  papers: 詩稿（寫詩的紙會隨時間泛黃）。

10. old men of less truth than tongue: 老人只剩下舌頭，沒有半句真話。 truth 和 tongue 以相同子音開始，押首韻。

11. poet’s rage: poet’s passion; inspired lunacy. 詩人的靈感（如癡如癲狂）。

12. stretched metre: 浮誇的詩文。

stretched: exaggerated. 

metre= (US) meter: 節奏，代表詩歌。

 

13–14行

13. rhyme: poetry.  You should live twice: be alive in the child and in the poetry. 你活在子嗣綿延，也活在詩中。最後的對偶句總結S1-S17 貫穿的主題「繁衍後嗣」，並且以生命不朽，形象永存連結繁衍和詩歌的共同功能。

將來有誰會相信我的詩文

假如寫的盡是你實際的至善?

可是，上蒼明鑒，它不過如同塚墳

掩埋你的生命，未顯你優點一半。

假如我能寫出你明眸的漂亮

並賦新詞細數你萬千秀妍，

後世會說，「這個詩人撒謊;

如此的仙姿鮮至凡人的臉。」

這樣我的詩稿，泛黃在時間裡，

會受到訕笑，像言過其實的老人，

而你應得的美譽被誣為詩人的夢囈，

是陳腔濫調的拖長延伸。

然而你若有個小孩活在當時，
