This brief report will provide you with
some highlights of the activities of our class reunion that took place in
Canada August 14-20, 2000. Under the able leadership and loving care of
Bea, the reunion was really a great success! Classmates came from the
U.S., Canada, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, some seeing each other for the first
time in 40 years!
The get-together brought back sweet
memories and made everyone young again. Reminiscing the good old days at
Taida and exchanging the experiences of our lives in vastly different
lifeworlds, everyone was constantly smiling and laughing--be it in the hotel
lobby, on the bus, in the dining rooms, on the ferries, in Chinatowns, on the
glacier, or by the beautiful lakes.
A high point of the reunion was the dinner
and evening party on August 15 at the Radisson President Hotel in
Vancouver. Vivia, who came to oin us all the way from Shanghai, expertly
emceed the party! Singing and dancing to the tunes of the 1950s (and some
1990s) played by a professional DJ, love, friendship and laughter filled the
hall throughout the night!
In that evening, a few minutes were spent
to conduct official business. By popular demand, Bea was officially elected by
unanimous acclamation as our Class Chief (Banzhang), Larry was made Assistant
to the Banzhang, and Kely Cheng was elected Treasurer. As Julie had
returned the unused portion of earlier donations to those classmates who had
contributed to the class fund, a class fee (banfei) of US$20 was collected from
each classmate present to be used for future activities. Patrick reported
on the status of the Ying Chien-li Scholarship in our department and urged us
to contribute to it to help our department. Finally, it was determined
that we should have a reunion every three years in the future.
Forty years is a long time, but the
reunion was such a happy occasion to all of us. We will always remember
the lovely Buthcart Gardens, the magnificent Canadian Rockies, the serene
Chateau Lake Louise and the Bow Lake, the vast Columbia Glacier, and the
beautiful cities of Vancouver, Victoria, Banff and Calgary.
But it was our laughs and smiles from the
beginning to the end, singing, dancing,
intimate conversations and interesting self-revelations
that will be remembered longer. Who can forget Wanda's wonderful
self-analysis and tell-it-as-it-is retrospective reflection of her early life;
Sally's nearly professional singing and Elena's sentimental songs; Frank's
quizzes of our classmates' early notable events; Lilly and Brian's elegant
ballroom dance performance; Laura's loving gazes; Jeanne's photographic memory;
and the group singing of auld lang syne in Chinese! We were honored to have
Legislator Parris Chang (Shirley's husband) as a spouse in our group whose views
on Taiwan's politics were deeply appreciated by those who talked with
him. I was particularly impressed by his objective analyses and
mesmerized by his eloquence.
The
following classmates deserve our special thanks for their hard work that made
the event a great success. I am sure everyone would agree that the
reemergence of our class after more than three decades is essentially the work
of Bea to whom we all owe a great debt. We must thank the planning
committee of the reunion consisting of Bea, Julie, Amy, Kely and Gerrie for
their hard work. Special thanks are due to Amy for her generosity in
paying for all of us the tips to the tour guide and bus driver--a substantial
amount of money! Thanks also go to Vivia for leading the evening program
on August 15. Last but not least, our deepest thanks must be reserved for
Kely who quietly did so much for us before, during and after the reunion,
including recording music and taking videos. We are also grateful to Bob
Shui, our tour guide, for his professional work, excellent briefings of places
and delightful little stories, which enhanced the enjoyment of the trip.
Bea has
already put many pictures on the web (Class60ReunionFamilyBeat.com); and I am
sure there will be more. If you wish to share the pictures you took, you
are welcome to post them there. Or if you want Bea to do so, please send her
the pictures (she will return them after use).
That is all for now. I know
some of you have already written on what you thought about the wonderful
reunion. Why not send your writings to all of us? After all, we are
all in the same family.
Long live the great class of
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of Taida! Good health and
happiness to all of you!
