狄瑾蒸(1830-1886)是美國隱士女詩人，寫過 一千七百多首令人耳目一新的短詩，詩風獨特，以文字 細膩、觀察敏銳、意象突出著稱。題材方面多半是自

然、死亡和永生。

28 Hope Is the Thing with Feathers

Hope is the thing with feathers'

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

 

And sweetest in the gale“ is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abasho the little bird

That kept so many warm.

 

I've heard it in the chillest land,

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

短 評

本詩具體而生動地刻畫出希望的特質。 詩分三節，首節以羽毛狀希望之輕盈溫暖，以歌聲狀其 歡欣。次節以狂風暴雨表示環境的險惡艱難，反襯出希望的甜 美與鼓舞人心。末節證以敘述者的經驗，同時再用對比的方式，指出希望「予而不取」的偉大。
