Ralph Waldo Emerson

愛默生(1803-1882)是美國散文家兼詩人。也是

所謂「超越論」(transcendentalism)的主導人物之 一。像詩中的松鼠一樣,他強調個人的神聖、堅持自 信(self-trust)與自立(self-reliance)的重要。愛默生 的詩說教意味都很濃厚。他的主要作品有《論文集》 (Essays)、《詩集》(Pourns)、《美國學者》(The Airnerican Scholar)等。

4 A Fable

The mountain and the squirrel

Had a quarrel;

And the former called the latter “Little Prig."1

Bun” replied, “2

You are doubtless very big;

But all sorts of things and weather

Must be taken in together 3

To make up a year

And a sphere."4

And I think it's no disgrace 5

To occupy my place.

If I'm not so large as you,

You are not half so small as I, 6

And not half so spry.7

I'll not deny you make

A very pretty squirrel track；8

Talents differ： all is well and wisely put;９

If I cannot carry forests on my back,

Neither can you crack" a nut.”10

 

 

寓言

 

大山和松鼠

吵架;

前者說後者是「小鬼」。

鼠回嘴：

「你果然很大;

但各種東西和天氣

必須加在一起

才構成年月

和世界。

所以我覺得占這一席之地

沒什麼好慚愧。

我固不如你雄偉,

你何嘗比得我嬌小

又活潑。

我不否認你可以做

一條美麗的松鼠徑;

天賦不同：一切都安排得正好。

若說我扛不了森林,

你可也撬不開堅果。」

 

 

1. prig： 在此可能有兩種解釋： (1) fellow，傢伙 （古用法) ; (2) smug：自負，自以為是，愛說教的人。

2. bun： (俚) 松鼠

3. taken in： included ： 包含在內

4. sphere： globe , 地球

5. disgrace： 丢人的事。

6. not half not at all not by any means,壓根兒不。

7. spry： 活潑。

8. track：(山)徑,路,跑道。

9. Talents differ： all is well and wisely put：天賦不同：一切安排得有智慧。即中國人所謂的天生我材必有用。

10. crack： 剝開、撬開。
